Gillis shuts the door, Eagles down Ice.

By Mike Jackman

A huge matchup on Thursday as the Clarington Eagles played host to the Georgina Ice.

1st Period

There were not many scoring opportunities in the first period, nor power play chances. The Eagles’ one big chance of the first period came by Brock Mathieson on a puck in the slot, but it just got fired wide. Meanwhile, the Ice’s Alessandro Petreccia, who has an OT goal this season in this very building, gets denied by starting goaltender Nate Gillis. We remain tied at 0 after one period.

2nd Period

One minute into this period, the Ice came out with one of the best chances of the frame as Austin Paulmart from in close couldn’t beat the stick hand of Eagles goalie Nate Gillis. Yet again, both teams had chances, but Gillis and Lindsay were rock solid for their respective teams. Off to the 3rd period at 0-0.

3rd Period

And yet again, Nate Gillis is determined to keep the Georgina Ice off the board with key saves. And Aiden Lindsay answered the bell as well with a great save off a Brayden Hicks redirect trying to go five-hole. You start to wonder if anyone’s going to get one on this night, and then it happened. After a Georgina penalty for boarding, the Eagles power play went to work and only took 0:34 seconds to strike. The player who does so is Gianluca Meli, who has come on strong lately. The Eagles almost got one more before the end as it looked like Caleb Bidgood had Aiden Lindsay down and out, but another miraculous save by the Ice netminder. The Eagles would hold on, though, not allowing anything to the net in the last minute with Lindsay on the bench, and pick up the 2 points with a 1-0 win.

The Eagles now get a week off to enjoy it and then host the Schomberg Cougars Thursday, Oct. 30th, with a 7:25 puck drop at the Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex.
