Seven Straight: Eagles Win Battle of the Unbeatens

The Clarington Eagles and Port Perry Lumberjacks had a huge battle scheduled for Sunday afternoon, with both teams putting their undefeated starts to the season on the line at Scugog Arena in Port Perry.

1st Period

The Eagles opened the scoring first, as Charlie Key found the back of the net with an assist from Jack Dean. What a start to the season these two have had as part of the Eagles’ offence.

But the Lumberjacks would answer before the end of the period, as Andrew Naccarato-Soule tied the game to send the teams into the second period even at 1-1.

2nd Period

Calenn Williams put Port Perry ahead for the first time in the game, but the Eagles erased that lead just 39 seconds later when Owen White found the back of the net to tie things up.

The Lumberjacks would regain the lead before the end of the period, however, as Cameron Power scored on the power play to send Port Perry to the dressing room with a 3-2 advantage.

3rd Period

If you like goal scoring — especially from your Clarington Eagles — then you would have loved what the third period brought.

In a span of just 5 minutes and 24 seconds, the Eagles exploded for three goals. Ethan Girard got things started, followed by Owen Thake and then Charlie Key with his second of the game.

Just like that, the Eagles had turned a 3-2 deficit into a 5-3 lead.

Port Perry cut the lead to one thanks to Austin Fata, but once again the Eagles had an answer, with Sutton Edwards finding the back of the net to make it 6-4.

The Lumberjacks weren’t finished, as Dylan Leslie scored to once again make it a one-goal game.

But the final goal of the night belonged to Christian Sokoljuk, who sealed it with an empty-netter as the Eagles survived a wild third period and escaped Port Perry with a 7-5 victory.

The win gives the Eagles their seventh straight victory to open the season, handing Port Perry its first loss in the battle of the previously unbeaten teams.

Please note, Eagles fans, there is no home game at the Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex on Thursday night, as the Eagles travel to Schomberg.

They return to home ice Sunday afternoon at 2:25 p.m. when they take on the Scarborough Knights.
