Eagles take Game 1 in a Heated Affair

Game 1 Review: Clarington Eagles vs. Georgina Ice

It’s that time of year—the time where regular-season stats mean diddly-squat. As playoff hockey fills the air, the Clarington Eagles finally begin their journey toward the Schmaltz Cup. After taking a bye in week one, their first roadblock is a familiar one: the Georgina Ice.

The Eagles and Ice have met in the postseason frequently over the last few years, but there is one major difference this time around: Georgina holds home-ice advantage. The series kicked off Friday night at the Ice Palace.

1st Period

The Eagles opened the scoring 5:51 into the first frame as Brock Mathieson buried his first of the playoffs to get the momentum rolling. Just 1 minute and 12 seconds later, the Eagles capitalized on a power play with a goal by Brayden Hicks to make it 2-0. However, the Ice managed to strike before the end of the frame; former Eagle Carson Mackenzie cut the lead in half, making it 2-1 heading into the second.

2nd Period

After being outshot 15–10 in the first, Georgina came out swinging. Carrying the momentum from Mackenzie’s late goal, the Ice peppered Eagles goaltender Nate Gillis with 19 shots in the second period. They eventually converted on a power play of their own when Sebastien Ferris tied the game at the 9:34 mark.

3rd Period

With the game knotted up, the Eagles received a power-play opportunity of their own and made no mistake. Blake Peters-Davey notched the team’s second PPG of the night, reclaiming the lead for Clarington. The Ice pressured hard for the equalizer late in the game, but they couldn’t find a way past Gillis. Gianluca Meli iced the game with an empty-netter to secure a 4-2 victory.

Final Thoughts

The Eagles now hold a 1-0 lead in this best-of-seven series. Nate Gillis was a standout, stopping 36 shots in the win. The series now shifts back to the GBRC for Game 2 this Sunday night. Puck drop is at 7:40 PM—come out, fill the rink, and get behind your Clarington Eagles on this 2026 playoff journey!
