Eagles Secure Massive Win in Battle for 3rd Place
It was a high-stakes matchup with huge implications for the Orr Division standings on Thursday night. The Clarington Eagles entered the game with a slim 1-point lead over the Port Perry Lumberjacks. Jairus Ford got the start in net for the Eagles, while Eamon Callaghan guarded the goal for the Lumberjacks.
1st Period
The Eagles thought they had struck first on a shot that tipped off Callaghan’s glove and hit the post. While the referees initially signaled a goal, they overturned the call after a brief discussion.
The Lumberjacks took advantage of the momentum shift, getting on the board first at the 10-minute mark when Parker Lemay tucked home a rebound. Less than five minutes later, despite being on a power play, a costly giveaway by the Eagles allowed Nate Stapleton to break away and slide the puck five-hole to make it 2-0.
The Eagles responded quickly on that same power play. Sutton Edwards fired a shot from the point that found its way past Callaghan. Just a minute later, Blake Peters Davey tied the game at 2-2 with a perfect shot, sending both teams into the break deadlocked.
2nd Period
The second frame saw 15 minutes of back-and-forth action as both teams fought for the lead. The Eagles finally broke the tie with a goal from Marcus Mori. Two minutes later, Blake Peters Davey notched his second of the night. To cap off a dominant surge, Christian Sokuljuk added another in the final minute of play, extending the lead to 5-2 heading into the third.
3rd Period
The Lumberjacks had several dangerous opportunities in close, but Jairus Ford stood his ground, shutting the door for the remainder of the night. Owen White added to the lead before Blake Peters Davey completed his hat trick to seal a 7-2 victory on home ice.
The Road to the Playoffs
Jairus Ford finished the night with a stellar 37 saves on 39 shots. With this win, the Eagles now control their own destiny for 3rd place. A win this Saturday in Little Britain, or a win on Family Day against those same Merchants, will officially clinch 3rd place in the Orr Division.
Family Day Event:
