Eagles fall to Lumberjacks

Clarington Eagles vs. Port Perry Lumberjacks | Sunday, Jan 18

The Clarington Eagles and Port Perry Lumberjacks, separated by just three points for third place in the Orr Division, faced off in a massive matchup at Scugog Arena this past Sunday. With the regular season winding down, the Eagles were looking to trim that lead to a single point.

1st Period

Jairus Ford got the start in net for the Eagles, facing off against Eamon Callaghan for the Lumberjacks. After a scoreless opening frame, the Eagles finally broke the ice late in the period. Blake Peters-Davey notched his 11th of the year at 18:13 to make it 1-0. Captain Nolan Matheson picked up the lone assist, and the Eagles carried that lead into the first intermission.

2nd Period

The Lumberjacks answered quickly in the second, scoring two goals in just 2 minutes and 8 seconds courtesy of Andrew Naccarato-Soule and Braedyn Vannetten to take a 2-1 lead. However, the Eagles fought back. Nolan Winter tied the game with six minutes left in the period, followed by a go-ahead goal from Gianluca Meli. Just as they did in the first, the Eagles headed into the locker room with a one-goal advantage.

3rd Period

It was “déjà vu” in the third as Raine Nadeau scored two straight goals to put the Lumberjacks back on top 4-3. The Eagles weren’t done yet, though; Gianluca Meli netted his second of the game to provide the equalizer and make it 4-4.

The deadlock didn’t last long. The Lumberjacks found the elusive fifth goal at 17:16 as Andrew Naccarato-Soule secured his second of the afternoon. That goal proved to be the winner, and an empty-netter sealed a 6-4 victory for Port Perry.

Looking Ahead

The Eagles return home following a two-game road trip that saw only one game played, as Thursday’s matchup in Schomberg was postponed due to weather.
