Eagles Win Streak Snapped

🦅 Eagles Win Streak Snapped by Schomberg  Cougars

The Clarington Eagles had a rare Saturday afternoon game, riding high on a three-game winning streak with back-to-back wins against Caledon and a victory against Georgina, outscoring their opponents 28-2 in the process.

However, the goaltending is now fully on Jairus Ford as the starter with Nate Gillis gone for a six-game suspension. Ford got the call for the first of those games Saturday against Schomberg.

1st Period

Ford answered the bell with a couple of great saves, including two big ones when it looked like he was down and out, yet he got his left pad up just enough to make a save on a rebound. The Eagles came back the other way on a break with a great opportunity to spring Marcus Mori, but the pass was just out of his reach. There was no scoring in the first, but Theo Lavender made his presence well known with a big hit by the penalty box area.

2nd Period

Brayden Hicks had the first big chance of the period from the slot area but could not beat Rafael Defina, the Cougars goaltender. A four-minute face-masking penalty to the Eagles’ Brock Mathieson put the Cougars on the power play, and they would convert on the second half of the four-minute double minor with a goal by Matthew Lychek.

The Eagles would get a power play of their own soon after and, on the delayed penalty, had a great chance to score, but Defina once again came up with a miraculous save to somehow keep it out. The Eagles would not score on said power play, leaving them down 1-0 after two periods of play.

3rd Period

Once again, there was more Eagles pressure, but they could not convert, which proved costly as Schomberg would get that insurance goal at 5:24 of the period. Wesley Redshaw walked to the slot area and snapped a shot past Ford to make it 2-0.

The Eagles tried everything, but their chances were either being blocked by the Schomberg defense or stopped by goaltender Defina. An empty-netter sealed the game, as the Eagles snap their three-game winning streak, falling 3-0 to Schomberg.

The team will now look forward to their game against the Uxbridge Bruins. This will be only the third game between these two teams, and both previous matchups have been thrilling.
